Regions of Welcome – Regional Settlement Conference 2018

Showcasing the success of regional settlement, opportunities and challenges, and the role of leadership in creating cohesive communities.

Australians have traditionally viewed refugee settlement as a capital city phenomenon. Much of the country’s attention and research has been focused on our largest metropolitan areas. But refugees are making new lives all across Australia and many success stories can be found in Australia’s regions.
Nevertheless, regional settlement remains a complex process, requiring careful policy and program approaches to ensure benefits for all stakeholders.

Regions of Welcome will bring together attendees from government agencies, academic institutions, settlement organisations and community groups to engage with some of the fundamental questions about settlement in regional locations and to bring national best practice to regional settlement.

Regional Australia is uniquely placed to offer integration and connection opportunities to new arrivals, who in kind bring much needed skills and diversity to regional communities that depend on new residents for economic growth and sustainability and civic participation.

August is Queensland Multicultural Month and we have deliberately designed the Conference to follow the Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival – a signature event for the region.  Upon registering, Conference delegates are invited to join the festival as a VIP guest.

Conference partners include:

  • CatholicCare Services- Toowoomba
  • University of Southern Queensland
  • Toowoomba International Multicultural Society
  • Pure Land Learning College
  • Toowoomba Regional Council

Our steering committee includes representatives from these organisations and local government and community representatives.

Cr Paul Antonio, Mayor of Toowoomba, invites delegates from across Australia to attend the first conference with this theme to be held in Australia.
